26/02/2008

Under the sponsorship of the French Consulate and the European Union, and in cooperation with the French Cultural Centre and the Palestinian National Theatre, “Helen's Necklace” play by the French-Canadian author Carole Fréchette, was performed on the stage of HRH Prince Turkey Bin Abdul Aziz Theatre. The Play was directed by the Lebanese director Mr. Nabil Al-Azan and performed by Saleh Bakri, Husam Abu Eisheh, Reem Talhami, Mahmoud Awad and Daoud Totah and the French actor Mireille Roussel.

The play is about Helen, a foreign tourist who is looking for her pearl necklace that she lost in a Middle Eastern city. Nabil, the taxi driver, becomes her guard; a defender and protector in that city. In a crowded neighborhood or in a refugee camp, Helen comes into contact with some of the inhabitants of that city. Each of them has lost something valuable; some lost their sons, some lost their country or even both. Yet they are trying to rebuild their lives.

Through these encounters Helen discovers a truth that is more painful than her own. She discovered that losing her pearl necklace is nothing compared to the losses of other people in the world. Then she goes back to her country, to the North, with a mission.

The director of the play, Mr. Al-Azan, has directed more than 15 plays in France, and has already produced “Helen's Necklace” in Lebanon, Syria and France. He received the Medal of Arts and Letters in Paris. At the end of the play, Dr. Nabil Alawi, the Director of the Public Relations Department, and Miss. Lucienne d`Alencon, the Director of the French Cultural Centre in Nablus honored the actors. Dr. Alawi also presented the University's plaque to Mr. Jamal Ghousheh, the General Manager of the Palestinian National Theater.
